Window Tinting is one of the fastest growing segments of the automotive aftermarket industry. The startup costs are extremely low - all you need is a roll of film, a few tools-of-the-trade and a customer vehicle.
My journey into the wonderful world of window tinting began in 1978. Fresh out of high school and looking for work, I stumbled upon a company looking to train a new residential/commercial window tinter.
So I began to learn how to tint homes with an expert installer.
We would load up our van full of window tint and head out to several jobs each day. Our territory covered most of the Los Angeles area so we probably drove 150 miles a day! I was making $350 a week for 5 days of work in 1978. That's the equivalent to $1025 a week in 2004!!
Back when I got my start, window tint was no where near the quality it is today. The window tinting industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 25 years.
After a couple years of doing residential/commercial tinting I decided it was time to learn how to tint cars and trucks. I was blessed to find a man who would train me at a shop right on the beach! Wow!! Needless to say I was thrilled at the opportunity.
First, I learned truck tinting - stationary quarter windows and doors - before I moved on to tinting cars. In a very short time I was tinting several cars a day and making $500 in a 5 day work week (that's the equivalent to $1160 a week today). Not bad for a beginner.Especially in 1980!!
In 1983 I opened my own window tinting business and did auto tinting as well as residential/commercial window tinting. In 1990 I sold my business for a large profit and moved out east.
Now I live in the Atlanta area. I have had so much success in my life with the window tinting industry that I decided to share some of the knowledge I've gained over the years with other's who are interested in learning about this wonderful career.

wow- this is a great dvd, although, i've been a master tinter for twelve years, this means twelve years, after i trained for five years with 5 tinters with a decade of expience each. This 75 min dvd is very informative, but watching a proffessional is much different than being one. to tint like that you would need to train with him in person, for 8 hours a day - 6 days a week - for 2 years; and even then you will still not be able to do alot of cars out there.
How will I recieve a certification for window tinting?
Hmm, I've never really considered window tinting as a small business. Tools like this hub for niche businesses are the way to go. It's a well put together set up, nice job.
So is this guy for real about the amount of money that can be made? And is it as easy as everyone says it is to generat business?
I live in england london but theres not many companies whom take on trainees as the business's here are small and independent.

As the internet grows and becomes the biggest factor to generating clients, internet marketing is crucial to the success of a window tinting business. I have found that the industry does not do a good job of optimizing their websites. Hi i've alway's wanted to start my own business and i didnt know what business to start and one morning i and my uncle stumbled on 3 guys who offer to tint his uncle's car on the parking of a shopping complex my uncles being broke he told them not intrested, what was intresting is that when we were done buying what we came for each of them was tinting his own car that made me realise that there is a lot of profit to make in this industry coz til 2day when i pass there those guys ar busy and they charge 320 a car,and i am pleased to say a month from now i wil be runing my own business zola frm south africa
